L. Pietrzak, Agricultural Education / FFA, of the Mora High School had 12 of her students out for a farm visit. The 10th-12th graders came out to visit the alpacas. It was nice day to visit the alpacas that were just shorn 3 weeks earlier. The little crias came up to say hello as well as Autumn, who is always the first to greet visitors. We talked about what you would need to own alpacas, alpaca history, breedings and the differences between huacayas and suris.

Thank you for visiting!!

This was another great year at the Shepherd's Harvest Festival! The Upper Midwest Alpacas fleece show was fantastic! Wini Labrecque, AOBA Fleece Judge was a great addition the this years festival. Wini is a real expert. She has already developed fabric from alpaca.

Lakeland Alpacas volunteers every year with the fleece show, in addition to organizing the UMA Co-op retail booth for the last 2 years. This was the first year to spin-off with my own booth. It's nice to be able to sell fleeces that have just been sheared off the alpacas earlier that week.

Highlights at the UMA Fleece show for Lakeland Alpacas:

My Lakeland Lucy: 1st Place
Lakeland Marcie: 1st Place, Best Luster Award
Heather's Acre Peruvian Andre: 2nd Place, Best Prepared Award

Shearing Day, May 3 2011

Today was a great day to shear our 28 alpacas. 4 of which belong to the proud owners Thom and Diana Johnson. Pete Hofmann and his assistant Michael started to shear @ 8am. It was all done by 1pm.
7 new crias were shorn this year.

Alpacas in Minnesota are sheared once a year. Most folks shear within a week of May 1st each year.
We all hope that we don't get snow in May. I have had my alpacas on my farm for 5 years. 2 of which,
I got snow after shearing. It's always a balancing act. We can't wait too long, the alpacas need a good regrowth before the days get cold. That often starts in late September. "Alpacas up North"
